As Assistant Nurse Manager, Michele’s time is split between caring for the patient at the bedside and working with Nursing Leadership, doctors, staff, and ancillary staff to help provide the best care patients deserve.
For six months prior to the opening of the new hospital, Michele worked closely with Andree Woosley (who takes the lead in opening new hospitals) to ensure the transition into the new facility went as smoothly as possible for staff and patients. Guiding over 100 staff members of the Adult Oncology Inpatient Unit through a thorough hospital and unit orientation, was a responsibility she enjoyed.
Michele states that what she likes best about her job is that she is still able to be at the bedside with the patient, yet be able to learn and be involved in Nursing Leadership at a higher level.
“Ever since the eighth grade, I’ve always known I wanted to be a nurse,”
Michele says. “And I’ve been a nurse now for 18 years. I enjoy the interaction with the patients and how appreciative they are of the care they receive. And I love watching new nurses come in and learn. That’s very rewarding.”
As she walked with her co-workers through this state-of-the-art facility for the first time, she couldn’t help but ponder the reason it exists.
“It’s a beautiful building. Talking with the people who helped build it, they spoke with a lot of pride in their voices,” she says. “I think the people of North Carolina are really going to appreciate this. This hospital is for them.”
