John Norton has always given money for cancer research through his family’s foundation. But for the past several years, this money has been directed toward specific work at UNC that aims to find better treatments for multiple myeloma.
John’s brother fought that disease for four years before losing his battle. During this time, John read about advances in myeloma research that UNC researchers were achieving and has been supporting this work through annual grants ever since.
John has learned how valuable research and a state of the art facility are not only through his brother’s story but his own. Twelve years ago, John was diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia and had to fly from his home in New York to Seattle for the best care in the country. But now, he sees how things have changed.
“So much has happened in twelve years that now we can have this sort of facility in North Carolina,” he says. “It’s just fantastic. You don’t have to go to major cities and leave home like I did. That’s a big thing.”
John’s family foundation still gives money to myeloma research so that one day the disease his brother had will be as treatable as the one John had.
