Florence Myers is a people person. And at 96, she’s still making friends. One of her latest is Dr. Benjamin Calvo.
In 2008, Florence was diagnosed with colon cancer and needed two operations. The second was an emergency, but Dr. Calvo was there to offer his expertise and a little something extra.
“He’s a wonderful person,” Florence says. “He makes you feel okay about things. I have great faith in him.”
After physical therapy, Florence felt well enough to return home to Coventry Place in Chapel Hill, where she especially enjoys socializing.
“I love life,” she says. “I love people and never met a stranger.”
Her son Dr. Barry Lentz, a UNC professor and director of the Molecular and Cellular Biophysics Program, says that his mother was “amazingly well cared for by the folks at Oncology Surgical ICU, especially considering she was there over the holiday break.”
Florence attributes her longevity and good health to her one-day-at-a-time philosophy. She says, “I just put myself in the hands of the Lord.”
