Maybe it’s the fact that she has wanted to be a doctor since she was a little girl, but Dr. Kimberly Kasow, also known as Dr. Kim, loves caring for kids. And as the director of UNC’s pediatric bone marrow transplant program, she treats children with the most serious of diseases; she comforts them, and helps guide them and their families through the entire treatment process and beyond.
“When I was in high school, I wanted to skip college and go directly to medical school,” Dr. Kasow says. But she is glad she went to college where she majored in Religion.
She is an osteopathic physician. Osteopathy, a profession that has been around for greater than 100 years, teaches its graduates to treat the whole patient as well as osteopathic manipulation techniques, an additional tool, to restore the body’s alignment and thus, its function. Today, her medical training and undergraduate experience give Dr. Kasow a wide perspective and help her provide care to her patients.
“It is an honor to be a part of these families’ lives during a very difficult time, one that we do not wish on any child or adult. For those that require our services, and it does take a team to provide quality care, our goal is the same, to see these kids become adults, cured of their diseases. And it is a great thrill – to see these kids grow up!”
